No argument. One can make a case for general fund support of museums, and government will sometimes commission pieces as a consumer, but the direct subsidy of artists makes no sense, and is merely politically divisive. However, I do not think that all argument will stop once the market is allowed to function properly, because there are many people with a stake in the direction the market takes.......
