Andreas, just to quote from this article:

Compaq Computer is not mincing words in its latest effort to stem customer defections in its Intel-based server business.

This is NOT the high margin high-end servers like Wildfire !
DELL has nothing in that server market segment and probably NEVER
will... Compaq did not have it either until the merger with
Digital !
. Such high-end design teams just don't get created
overnight, it takes several years to build a team with such
expertise and enough of a critical mass to "do" supercomputers...

On the other hand I fully support the "no prisoners taken"
approach vis-a-vis DELL even in the off-the-shelf server
technology that DELL does manage to design and sell. Why
shouldn't Compaq be more aggressive here? I'm all for it.

But our discussion a few months ago was not just limited to the Intel-based servers... The real money is in alpha-based
servers. Celera Genomics would not accept an IBM high-end server for
free (!), they HAD to have an alpha to win the mapping of the
human genome race. And they did NOT mind paying a premium for it !
