Yes, you would need two memory controllers. Sony PS2 has eDRAM and DRDRAM, and requires multiple controllers.

How much space does an on-board controller take?

It is difficult to build CMOS circuitry in a DRAM process. However, you can build DRAM in a standard CMOS process. There is little preventing people from adding DRAM to a high performance CMOS chip. I expect to see lots of those types of designs within a year or two. I believe that Sony PS2 has this already.

Why is it easy to add DRAM to logic but not vice-versa?
