Thanks to Steve Lee for finding the Telecommanalyst piece...

...which is a short interview with Dr. Harari.

Binx, I cannot tell you the details of the SSTI agreement, but I believe it is a cross-licensing arrangement that bears royalty payments to SanDisk. Not all of the cross-licensing arrangements work this way as there may be an equal exchange of technology which includes no royalties whatsoever.

[EH] ...as far as our intellectual property -- our patent position -- goes, we do have a very strong position, and our competitors do have to license our technology. We have granted royalty-bearing licenses to TOSHIBA, HITACHI, SAMSUNG, INTEL (INTC) and SHARP (SHCAY) -- the main competitors in our market.

If you were to ask EH if he felt that SanDisk could ever have 100% of the flash market he would laugh. The market is too diverse and multifaceted and SanDisk's solutions do not attempt to blanket all corners of the flash market. If you asked him whether SanDisk could ever supply 100% of the flash card market, he would also laugh. This is because the market is too huge. Also, SanDisk's position is to present their innovations as open, proprietary standards to engender second-sourcing, price competition and further development (such as Lexar's USB-enabled technology). This is the only way a standard can blossom.

Eli would be happy with XX% of the flash card market and royalty-bearing agreements on 100-XX% of the remainder.
