Looks like it's going well. Starting from almost nothing last year to signing up 400,000 cable telephony customers will impressive beginning. Then it sounds as if, like others, ATT is hurt on the cable modem deployments due to cable modem shortage. I believe this is what others have been saying too, so IMVHO, it's not just an excuse. Finally I was very surprised to see that ATT has 2,200,000 digital cable TV subs hooked up! From what I've been reading, I was under the impression there were only 3,000,000 digital cable TV subs worldwide(not including DBS). I'm thinking now that the 3 million figure must be on the low side. -MikeM(From Florida) *****************************Somers Sees 400,000 Phone Subs July 13, 2000 Newport, R.I. -- Two weeks before AT&T Corp. is set to announce second-quarter results, AT&T Broadband president and CEO Dan Somers said Tuesday that his division will easily meet key penetration targets, including reaching 400,000 telephony customers by year-end . "I said 400,000 to 500,000 [telephony subscribers], and we are on course this week to do that. I know where I am today, and I know how many trucks I roll a day. I can't sell enough," Somers told reporters after a speech to the New England Cable Television Association show here. AT&T Broadband's phone penetration is being closely watched by Wall Street as evidence that the company can execute AT&T chairman C. Michael Armstrong's vision of AT&T as a provider of voice, data and video programming to consumers. Somers said cable-modem subscribers should reach 700,000 by year-end , but signing up customers has been hurt by a lack of modems . Digital-cable-television subscribers just crossed the 2.2 million mark , he added. Those totals, he said, should be a warning to those who say Armstrong's huge investments in cable are not paying off . "We are hitting the numbers, and we will hit the numbers this year," Somers said. Somers' comments came on a day when AT&T's stock got battered on Wall Street, losing slightly more than $1 to close just below $32 per share -- well off its 52-week high of $61. "Those who are shareholders: Just relax, step back, it will get better. Trust me," Somers said.
