LBMA May daily gold turnover up 1.2%; silver rises sharply
London--June 12--The London Bullion Market Association said Monday average
daily cleared turnover for gold in May rose 1.2% on the month to 25.5 million
ounces--but this was down 20% on the amount transferred in May 1999. The average
price fell from U.S. $279.69 to $275.19, and the average daily value fell
slightly to $7 billion--$2 billion lower than 1999's level. The number of
transfers slipped from 7

Short-covering boosts spot gold in Asia in the sluggish market
Tokyo--June 13--Spot gold surged to break the previous key psychological
resistance point of U.S. $290 per ounce on Tuesday early in Asia due to
short-covering by investment funds in thin trading, dealers said. The overnight
price surge in the U.S. market triggered the short-covering, they said. (Story
