<<I am still looking for the first pure play B2C e-commerce site that is profitable. The industry is becoming more mature all the time.>>

Glenn monster.com was profitable from fairly early on I believe. It is part of a larger co now, but is that co's largest cash flow source. The founder sold it for about $9 mill in 1997. Not sure if that qualifies as a pure play.

There is also a small book sales site that is profitable. They are very focused on rare, hard to find and out of print stuff, and have little overhead, and it actually has a pretty good profit margin. Wish I could remember the name of it. Privately-held if memory serves me.
