i disagree...just because the big currencies have evolved into more or less pure fiat systems doesn't mean that gold has lost its role as a form of money. obviously if gold rallies whenever the dollar falls, the perception of gold as a currency still exists. it is the only currency that is not someone else's obligation, and since fiat systems have been eventually discredited throughout history, i expect it to make a surprising come-back at some point.
as for your coins, if i were you, i'd keep them.
