Jim,

Latency and bandwidth are intimately related. Both need to be evaluated. Focusing on latency is a mistake IMO.

Bandwidth is irrelevant for performance until the memory subsystem becomes congested, at which time it starts affecting latency.

Someone posted links to some Intel slides a few months back, which showed how latency increased as the memory became saturated. Intel's rationale for DRDRAM is that higher CPU speeds will saturate SDRAM, thereby impacting latency and requiring higher bandwidth memory.
