John Train advises postage stamps and works of art (which can be rolled up in a tube), as well as jewelry.

I have never known or even heard of anyone who went through current airport security with a pound of Kruggerands in his pockets and then took them to a bank in Switzerland. And that would only be worth about, say, $5,000 at current prices. By far the cheapest and most convenient way to own physical gold is to buy CEF. Often at a discount.

It has often been said by various prophets of doom and historians that Diamonds are the best guard against political and/or financial upheavel. They hold up as well or better than gold in inflation or deflation, and you can carry a lifetime supply in your pockets as you sneak across the border.

You can't exactly exchange one for a 6 pack or a cheeseburger though. <g>
