ALCATEL REACHED # 3 MOBILE HANDSET POSITION IN WESTERN EUROPE FOR THE FIRST QUARTER 2000 Paris, June 13, 2000 - According to the latest Dataquest ranking of the Western European mobile handset industry's performance, Alcatel is now in third position with shipments above four million handsets. This gives Alcatel a 13.4% market share for the first quarter of 2000. "This is welcome confirmation of our strong competitive performance and of the qualities that operators, retailers and consumers find in our current One Touch(TM) range" says Jacques Combet, President of Alcatel's GSM mobile activities. "In a few weeks, consumers will start to discover our new GSM handsets and WAP across the range. We are confident this will allow us to upgrade our target beyond 20 million Alcatel handsets for 2000." Gartner Group's latest Dataquest Alert, published in May put Alcatel in fifth place in the global cellular market, with shipments of nearly five million handsets. Focusing on the GSM standard only, Alcatel reached a global market share of 5.5% in the multi-standards cellular market for the first quarter of the year. Dataquest estimates that the total world-wide market for mobile terminals reached slightly more than 90 million units in the first quarter.
