LGIC, Ericsson enter into 3G partnership
LG Information and Communications (LGIC) and Ericsson have agreed to enter into partnership for development of the IMT-2000 system.

The MOU on the partnership which covers technology development, production and marketing was signed between LGIC President Suh Pyung-won and Janos Fugedi, president of Ericsson Korea last Friday.

LGIC's partnership with Ericsson is regarded as a positive development for its wireless affiliate LG Telecom (LGT) as the company bids for a 3G operator's license. LGT and more broadly, the LG camp, including LGIC, suffered a major blow with Hansol M.com going over to its rival KT Freetel after LGT's talks with the smallest wireless operator broke down.

The joining of forces between LGIC and Ericsson, the world-leader in GSM (global system for mobile communications) and W-CDMA (wideband code division multiple access) technologies will bolster LGIC' existing W-CDMA technology. This, combined with the company's strong offerings in the CDMA sector, means that LGT will be able to offer both W-CDMA and cdma2000 services, a significant plus as the Ministry of Information and Communication seems set to defer standard adoption until after the 3G operators have been selected.

Ruffian: What is missed by many so far is the point that you have just posted.

While China Unicom has delayed the initiation of IS-95 current technology, it is saying loud and clear that it will use Qualcomm's 3rd gen technology - with the strong implication that the path will be 1X asap, then adding HDR, i.e. the first phase of CDMA 2000.

The choice for "testing" is CDMA 2000 - not repeat not WCDMA.

This is HUGE.

It means that China Unicom is indicating that it plans to use CDMA 2000.

The implications for Asia (and the world) of that are worth the delay to date, no?

Best.
