OTOH, some number of inches must constitute a dangerous wave height. All hands on deck, we're facing 9 inch seas tonight!

TWY, That must be one of the hydrofoil cats. Once they lift the hull from the water they are capable of very good speeds. I used to have a Tornado, and that was a fast cat, but it would not go 55 as it was a wetted hull.
Unless of course yours is power driven. There are windpowered hydrofoil cats that do 55 or more.

Just read back a few, I see now it is an outboard.
