DoCoMo May List in New York in 2001
As Part of Its Bid to Pursue Expansion

TOKYO -- NTT DoCoMo Inc. is laying plans for a public offering of its shares on the New York Stock Exchange around the middle of next year, according to people familiar with the company.

The Japanese cellular giant could potentially use proceeds from the offering to help fuel its international expansion. In November DoCoMo agreed to invest $9.8 billion for a 16% stake in AT&T Wireless Group Inc. Over the past year it has taken minority stakes in several wireless providers spanning Asia and Europe.

In a statement today [Friday] DoCoMo said that it hasn't made a decision on listing in the U.S. A listing in New York has been under discussion within DoCoMo since at least last June, when shares of the company jumped after an official mentioned the idea of a New York listing at a shareholder meeting.

A New York offering would lead to the U.S. debut of Japan's highest-valued company based on market capitalization. Following its IPO in 1998, DoCoMo has steadily grown its business, recently getting a big boost from blistering growth of its i-mode mobile Internet service.

NYSE officials have held several meetings over the listing with DoCoMo's top management, including DoCoMo President Keiji Tachikawa.

Despite DoCoMo's still-growing profits, the company's share price has taken a drubbing amid a global fall of telecommunications shares. On Thursday its shares hit a year low of 2 million yen ($17,740) before ending with a 6.7% fall at 2.1 million yen.

DoCoMo's share price has been under pressure on speculation it may raise as much as one trillion yen through a new share issue in Japan to finance its deal with AT&T Wireless. DoCoMo, in the statement, said it hasn't made a decision on listing new shares.
