It is to bad you missed the entire point. The post is not about technology it is about MARKETS and free markets.
and thank you for proving even more.

CERN Labs in Geneva and taken up by academic institutions throughout Europe. (I was using JANET and Usenet in the UK 15 years ago).

GSM is a Government supported boondoggle
The whole internet started off as a government boondoggle, on both sides of the pond.

Where is the European CISCO YAHOO AMZN etc... ?

Your criticism of the state of the 'phone system in Europe is misplaced. I could only connect at 26000 up in Santa Barbara last weekend!

I guess that is better than the 14kbps I got in most of France except Paris, and it was a slow 14kbps.
The cost is much more period. The cost structure is unimportant.

The Europeans are behind in mobile phones from the start
That is nonsense. MOT and ERICY were field trialling GSM in Europe during the late eighties and early nineties. Major digital networks were in place in Germany and the UK years before their counterparts in the US.

Do me a favor and re-read the post and then consider that statement. The issue is competition. That is why no matter the starting point. They will never keep a lead until they allow markets to work. This is not Jingoism it is Capitalism.

<However, the internet, per se, didn't arrive until much later. www was invented at the CERN Labs in Geneva and taken up by academic institutions throughout Europe. (I was using JANET and Usenet in the UK 15 years ago).>

That is complete BS.

Click on company info and then click on the internet timeline. I would also recommend the book "When Wizards Stay Up Late".
