Taiwan's TWSE Index fell 1 percent to 8844.97, led by computer chipmakers such as Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. and United Microelectronics Corp., on a report Taiwan will make its industry incentive program more difficult for chipmakers to qualify. Under the new government policy, only computer chipmakers investing in the cutting edge 0.13-micron wafer plants will be qualified to receive tax breaks and other incentives, the Commercial Times reported. At present, those investing in 0.18- micron wafer plants are qualified. TSMC, the biggest computer chip maker on a contract basis, fell 2.6 percent to NT$150. UMC, TSMC's biggest rival, fell 1.6 percent to NT$90.5.
