Less than 1% of U.S. phone users plan to go completely wireless, says study

OYSTER BAY, N.Y. -- Despite the rush to introduce products for radio-frequency communications, less than 1% of the U.S. population has decided to unplug wireline telephones to go completely wireless, concluded a new study by Allied Business Intelligence Inc. here.

The research firm today said its "Mobile Wireless Voice and Data Usage 2000" study found that most users do not see wireless systems replacing wireline telephones. "It is evident that most wireless users are complementing wireline use with wireless, but the overall replacement of wireline phones by wireless phones is not occurring as rapidly as we have been led to believe by anecdotal evidence," said analyst Anna Karampahtsis, who was the study's manager at Allied Business Intelligence.

The study's usable sample consisted of 1,200 individuals in U.S. households. The research firm said the demographic profile of the sample closely matched the U.S. census of the country's population.
