Yes. That is the orthodox view and it is right as far as it goes. The trouble with software is that it is getting more and more expensive as design requirements mount for each technological advance. So every time the big 3 introduce a more advanced console, the programmers (i.e. the third party software producers) have to restructure or resize. We are in that period right now.

However, if you look at the peripherals, these sell well with better overall margins than software in times of technological change as they contribute to the enhanced effect of the new consoles whether it is fishing rods, steering wheels or even screen magnifyers for the Gameboy.

Also, I believe peripherals represent an inexpensive inside track in the race towards convergence which is the major attraction of the coming home entertainment bonanza.
