RE: Brocade and Cisco....

The announcement yesterday was a pretty significant step. Probably more so than the average investor (like myself) realizes. Brocade and Emulex come out with an announcement today as well:

In terms of gorilla gaming, you have to look at the platform of FC and IP switching being combined in a network management tool for both networks as having as good a chance as any to 'create the chance' for a de facto standard to develop. What the hell does that mean? We know that in the IT world, the IT pros are in the routine of being able to get Cisco purchases approved. Would a Brocade interface board, due to the announcement of Cisco/Brocade of FC over IP, lend itself to the opportunity of similar IT purchase approval giving Brocade an increasing brand name market place acceptance? I'm not saying this will happen, but at least the stage is set to create the opportunity for it to happen. It will depend on how the software development for the Cisco/Brocade project develops.

Let's look at some words that CEO Greg Reyes said:

"We don't want to get out on a limb and point to the centerfield bleachers," quips Brocade CEO Gregory Reyes. "But we do want people to know the market is a lot bigger than they thought it was." International Data Corp. has estimated that the market for storage area networks -- which Brocade leads -- will grow from $250 million in 1999 to $3 billion in 2003. Says Reyes: "We think the total available market is ten times that."

Let's see, 10 X $3 Billion = $30 Billion. Somebody is going to make some money over the next three years.
