Vixel Announces Support for Sun Microsystems' Effort to Drive Multi-Vendor Switch Interoperability Vixel to Focus on Delivering True Heterogeneous SAN Environments

SANTA CLARA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 14, 2000--Vixel Corporation (Nasdaq:VIXL) today announced its support for Sun Microsystems, Inc.'s (Nasdaq:SUNW) multi-vendor switch interoperability initiative in storage area networks (SANs).

Increasing interoperability among multiple vendors is part of Sun's Storage for the New Net Economy strategy, which includes an integrated focus on new products, services and programs to deliver the highest quality end-to-end storage solutions to customers.

"Encouraging interoperability among switch vendors is an important element of Sun's network storage strategy, and Vixel's established leadership in the SAN market makes the company a welcome participant in our effort to increase interoperability," said Janpieter Scheerder, president, Sun Network Storage. "Interoperability issues must be addressed before SANs can reach their full potential and before adoption can flourish."

Vixel Fibre Channel switches and hubs support heterogeneous SAN environments, providing high-speed and continuous data movement in mission-critical applications. The Vixel 7000 Series Switches feature Vixel's proven `Stealth' private loop technology, now in its third generation, and offer a seamless fabric migration path. The Vixel 2100 Zoning Managed Hub delivers four independent 100 MBps loops, four times the bandwidth of traditional managed hubs. Vixel switches and hubs are managed by SAN InSite(TM) 2000, Vixel's Java-based SAN interconnect management software. SAN InSite 2000 is the industry's only management software that enables end-users to auto-discover, monitor and manage all SAN interconnect devices, including non-Vixel devices.

"The widespread acceptance of storage networks depends on industry leaders collaborating to certify interoperability among their products. Sun's efforts to increase interoperability addresses end-users' demands that the devices they choose are compatible with one another and will provide the highest performance and reliability possible," said Jim McCluney, president and CEO, Vixel Corporation. "Vixel looks forward to continuing its long-standing relationship with Sun, removing barriers to interoperability and fueling the growth of storage network adoption."
