Hi OS: I recognize your screen name for the ORCL thread. First off, where are you located, Atlanta area? I ask because your profile indicates that you are in LA. Recently transplanted?I dumped all of my DSL stocks and purchased @Home stock when I realized how flawed DSL really is. I am not the only one with these problems. DSL is simply UNRELIABLE. IMHO, your argument is somewhat flawed. You see, IMHO, the quality of DSL will vary from provider to provider. And IMHO, BLS does not appear to be one of leading RBOCs in DSL. I say this based upon my perception that BLS has channeled most of its efforts on FTTH. Moreover, DSL will vary from location to location, which in turn is a reflection of QoS management by the provider. Some telcos will do their best to provision DSL to a customer, then let the customer "live with it" regardless of the reliability of the service. Others will not provision the service if there is the slightest indication that DSL service will be problematic. I use GTE as an example of the latter, at least here in So. California. It sounds like your DSL was in-fact extremely unreliable, & therefore should likely never have been provisioned to your home. This is why tariff limits exist. In California, the tariff limit is about 17,500 ft loop distance. If your located beyond this limit, the government regulators basically prohibit the teleco's from provisioning you the service & charging you the "upscale" DSL rate. Of course, this regulation is not strictly enforced, as I have heard stories from PacBell installers of provisioning customers 18-19K ft out, but warning them that their DSL service is likely to be spotty and to not expect the guaranteed minimum bandwidth of 384K bps, which PacBell presently offers its residential customers. As for your particular situation, I can not speak to it as I do not know the facts. How far are you from the CO? What kinda DSL does BLS provision? Perhaps MikeM, who is situated in your part of the country, & is likely a bit more familiar with BLS than I, could impart some explanation of why your service has been so poor.
