We fully agree on this..<<since one human life may be all you get. That's all folks.>> The idea that I personally have all this power (That you attribute to me) to determine the fate of a human life is incomprehensible. The forces that determine the fate of a life on earth are vast, some seen and some unseen. You dear, have reduced the responsibility of all these forces to the person imposing or carrying out sentence. Although that may be comforting, it is a teensy bit naive.
