Joe W., Did you read this description of MFNX new center. Very first class!

SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 8, 2000--

Opening Is Part of $1.4-Billion Expansion to Build
the Next Generation of Optical Internet Infrastructure

Metromedia Fiber Network, Inc., (MFN) (Nasdaq:MFNX) the leader in deployment of optical IP Internet infrastructure within key metropolitan areas internationally, and provider of world-class data centers and Internet connectivity through its AboveNet Communications subsidiary, unveiled a new second Internet Service Exchange (ISX) facility today in Silicon Valley.
As part of MFN's aggressive, $1.4 billion expansion to build the Internet infrastructure of the future, the San Jose II facility will provide MFN customers with the most advanced, reliable data center environment available, as well as Internet connectivity via a dedicated, all-fiber international optical IP network. The network employs groundbreaking ASAP(TM) intelligent network routing and peering technology, which qualitatively measures the Internet for the "best exit" available for data, thereby ensuring the highest level of data integrity. This unique combination of intelligent connectivity and massive bandwidth availability enables MFN customers, content and service providers, to deliver an ever-advancing class of new, data-rich applications.
The 123,500-square-foot facility in downtown San Jose is one of 18 new data centers to be built by MFN in North America and Europe over the next 12-18 months, bringing the company's total number of ISX facilities to 26. In addition, MFN has 29,000 route miles of dedicated long-haul fiber in place worldwide that will help to connect all 26 facilities, and plans to deploy local fiber networks directly to customer premises in 67 markets internationally. To date, MFN has 742,000 intra-city fiber miles in service and is well along in its plan to deploy 3.6 million fiber miles by the year 2004. The result will be the world's largest and most advanced end-to-end, purely optical IP network.
"The next generation of the Internet is under construction right now, and companies around the world can't wait to get on," said Nick Tanzi, president and chief operating officer of Metromedia Fiber Network. "MFN is committed to an aggressive expansion strategy to meet the demand from companies seeking a more reliable and higher performance network infrastructure for conducting business on the Internet. Our San Jose II facility is already booked to capacity, but additional data centers will be brought on-line in the coming months."
The San Jose II data center (ISX) sets new standards in the deployment of the most advanced intelligent networking technology, connectivity, security, and reliable co-location environments. By co-locating network equipment and servers in ISX facilities, enterprise customers, content providers and Internet service providers combine the most advanced Internet connectivity solutions with virtually unlimited data throughput capacity via dark fiber connections running into each center. Many of these MFN customers are expected to use this bandwidth to deploy upgradeable Gigabit Ethernet connections to the Internet, delivering content to the end user faster and more efficiently.
"This premier facility, with its quality workmanship, and our excellent employees continue to raise the bar on the Internet of the future," said Dave Rand, chief technology officer of Metromedia Fiber Network. "Customers such as AOL, eBay, and Ask Jeeves have come to expect the best, most advanced connectivity technology and the most secure, reliable environment from us. Our new San Jose II ISX, and others under construction, will deliver all this and more."
The ISX incorporates a number of structural and physical advances to ensure industry-leading reliability and availability. Over 190 miles of fiber runs throughout the facility and all of the local MFN fiber optic backbones connect to the ISX. In addition, the ISX can provide dedicated fiber-optic connections between the customer's premises and the ISX facility. The most advanced Continuous Power System (CPS) available delivers enough reserve energy to power the facility at full load for 40 hours with the basic fuel capacity stored on site.
With 805 tons of steel, Kevlar-bound seismic brace frames, unistrut support structures, and high-resistance grounding, the new San Jose II ISX is the first building in the San Jose area to meet the 1997 UBC seismic requirements. Air conditioning units with 1,400 tons of cooling capacity and a Very Early Smoke Detection Alarm (VESDA), which constantly samples the air for potentially dangerous particles, combine for top-level air quality and fire safety. Customers are provided with superior facility support, including a 24x7 staffed call center, equipment-testing area, work area, training center and conference center. Comprehensive, 24-hour surveillance underpins MFN's commitment to securing the sophisticated and mission-critical environment of the ISX.

And todays MFNX/SUNW announcement..

Sun Microsystems and Metromedia Fiber Network Agree to Develop Remote Storage Provisioning Resources for Storage Service Providers
Sun's StorEdge(TM) Arrays and Enterprise(TM) Servers, MFN's Optical Internet Infrastructure and Arsenal Digital Solutions' Services Expertise to Provide An Easy-to-Use, Seamless Storage Resource on the Web
PALO ALTO, Calif., June 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Sun Microsystems, Inc. (Nasdaq: SUNW - news) and Metromedia Fiber Network, Inc. (MFN) (Nasdaq: MFNX - news) have agreed to develop and deploy new remote storage management services that will enable Storage Service Providers (SSPs) to offer outsourced bandwidth and storage services to their customers on a pay-as-you-go basis.

The parties will combine MFN's end-to-end IP infrastructure and the Internet Data Center facilities of MFN's AboveNet subsidiary with Sun's storage and server technologies. The combination will allow SSPs to take advantage of MFN's unique intra-city fiber-optic infrastructure and Sun's servers and storage to deliver turnkey, network-based storage services to ASPs, ISPs, dot-coms, and enterprise customers.

Arsenal Digital Solutions (formerly Usendit.com), one of Sun Microsystems' Elite Plus Service Providers and a leading storage utility services company, plans to be the first SSP to use the proposed solution. Arsenal's proven expertise in the implementation, operation, and management of storage utility solutions will bring remote storage services to the marketplace.

``In many respects, Sun's vision of the service-driven network is embodied in today's announcement,'' said Janpieter Scheerder, president, Sun Network Storage. ``We look forward to teaming up with MFN and storage service providers such as Arsenal to help pioneer the delivery of Web-based storage services.''

``This utility, which provides a scalable usage-based infrastructure, will allow service providers and enterprise clients to provide remote storage solutions,'' said Nick Tanzi, president and chief operating officer, Metromedia Fiber Network. ``Customers will no longer be subject to the traffic and bandwidth bottlenecks of traditional carriers or have to make large initial investments in unused storage capacity.''

``Storage is a rapidly expanding industry, which has been challenged to provide a secure and cost-effective solution that combines network and bandwidth expertise, technological infrastructure, and management and services under one umbrella,'' said Geoff Sinn, president and chief operating officer, Arsenal. ``By leveraging the infrastructure and technology of MFN and Sun, Arsenal will be able to provide a sophisticated, affordable and fully managed remote storage solution for both the enterprise and the .com customer.''

Initial facilities are planned for New York, San Francisco and London. Customers who use these centers will be able to avoid the delays and costs associated with traditional storage solutions. The market for storage utility services is expected to reach $8 billion by 2003.

Joe,

Re; the Matrix.

You had me LOL on your post. Thanks. To be honest with you, I thought The Matrix should have been up for Best Picture last year. Sure, the film had some holes in it but it was fun to watch and directed with genius. If someone can make a good film with Keanu Reaves at the helm, then someone is really not of this world. ;-)
