To give you an idea of how treacherous this investment environment is, consider my experience with gifting to my daughter.

I've decided to give her an amount approximating the irs gifting limit per year, distributing half at her b-day, and half at the end of the year (we celebrate Christmas).

So far, the gnet I purchased for her in 6/99 is still down 50%, the icge I purchased in 12/99 is down 66%, and the iih which I mistakenly purchased in 3/2000 for distribution this month and in december is down 40%.

It's tough right now. Buy and hold, as I've done with her account, and I show large paper losses. Buy and sell, as I've down in my own account, and I pay enormous taxes to Uncle Sam and my dear state of CA, but I still expose myself to not timing things quite right ;) and suffering 7 figure losses.

Something's gotta give!
