Vodafone and China Unicom in roaming pact
By Reuters staff

13 June 2000

Vodafone AirTouch Plc, the world's largest mobile company, and soon-to-be-listed China Unicom Ltd on Tuesday said they had signed an agreement to work towards providing global roaming capability for their customers and cooperating on mobile technology.

Vodafone said it will seek to have its controlled subsidiaries initiate talks towards reaching standard non-exclusive roaming agreements with China Unicom and its affiliates.

China Unicom on Tuesday began an initial public offering that could raise up to about US$5.8 billion - making it potentially the largest-ever Asia IPO outside Japan. China Unicom is the number-two telecoms firm in China, and its shares will begin trading June 21 in New York and June 22 in Hong Kong.

"(We) are excited to enter into discussions regarding areas of cooperation in mobile operations including wireless data and future joint ventures and partnerships in China upon China's accession to the WTO (World Trade Organization)," said China Unicom President Wang Jianzhou in a statement.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Edmund Harris, portfolio manager with Investec Guinness Flight in Hong Kong, said the roaming deal for now is of more symbolic than financial significance for Unicom, which is sprucing itself up for its IPO.

"It's more a case of you doing a deal with the brightest and the best, and that puts a very positive gloss," he said.

The technology cooperation agreements could be "potentially interesting," he added.

Bill Keever, president of the Americas and Asia-Pacific for Vodafone, said, "we look forward to working with China Unicom and gaining an on-the-ground understanding of the future potential of doing business in China."
