Whenever one of these air-conditioning guys tries pulling that "higher fuel prices" whining, I just log on to the web and show him that every major news outlet in America is reporting that fuel prices are actually *lower* than they were last month. How could they all be wrong? I point out to him that his only possible excuse is that he must have gone to one of the few "expensive" gas stations. Result: He doesn't hit me with the surcharge, and in fact gives me a slight rebate for showing that it must be easy to cut his fuel costs.

[...didn't BLS just report falling transportation costs? what's this nonsense about fuel surcharges being passed on? hasn't it become cheaper to transport goods? LOL!!!]

You aren't accounting for the 25%+ of U.S. GDP that is made up of web sites bartering advertising back and forth. Since this is fuel-free, it can be combined with the new government regulations requiring all motor vehicles to stop at least once every two hours to siphon their excess gas into the oil company stations' tanks. -g-
