XAU weakness may or may not be meaningful. After so many failed rallies, gold stocks investors may simply be unwilling to bid up the stocks in a big way until gold proves it can go up and stay up. I suspect that the pattern of a big rise in the XAU followed by a collapse may not repeat this cycle. The upside may be slower, but it probably will have more staying power.

Oil stocks lagged POO on the upside for quite some time during the early phase of the oil bull, but eventually caught up. No reason why XAU cannot do the same.
