The Internet, per se was born out of ARPAnet, which was preceded by DARPAnet, and was pretty much defined prior to 1980. Genuity, formally GTE Internetworking, formally BBN, built ARPAnet, and they do have the story correct. My research is very complete...I deal with this issue nearly daily.

Your termination "Invented" was the problem, The document uses "developed" which is realistic. There is a big difference between invent and developed.

The real engine and transmission of internet is TCP/IP, which is invented and developed out of ARPANET. The main goal of this model is to connect multiple networks in a seamless way, which is the spirit of the internet of today.

World Wide Web is only one of the application on top of the internet, along with email and a lot of others.

Therefore it is fair to say U.S. is the inventor of internet.
