Yes, but you have to tell your broker what shares you are buying (or covering). You should ask for documentation of the requested shares by putting "VSP xx/xx/xx" on your confirmation. Some brokers may ignore such a request but if you have proof that you asked for it, the IRS is OK with that. So the best thing is to send a letter to your broker saying - "I hereby request that the XXX shares of YYY sold in account NNNNNNN on DDDDDD be the ones purchased on EEEEEE." Keep a copy of the letter preferably not on paper purchased next year. You can also request that calls you exercise be the ones purchased on a particular date.

Note that the IRS has no requirement that brokerage firms keep such letters (hint, hint, winky, winky) or that they actually try to follow your instructions.
