Pravin:

I have always used an average purchase price, if for same company, of inventory shares when calculating capital gains and it's never been an issue...Never thought about LIFO or FIFO...But then again, I live in Canada!

Pravin,

With E*Trade, you can call them to ask for selling a specific bunch of shares with a specific aquiring date. If I want to sell the AMD shares I bought last, I have to call to sell that bunch. But it can be done for the record.

It's somewhat similar when I create a bull call spread on AMD. I need to tell them that the call I sell is not a covered call against my shares.

You need to call your broker. Hope it helps.

Pravin, I asked that very question from tax advisor,

If you tell your broker which block to sell, then the answer is obvious. But if you DO NOT SPECIFY then it is first bought/first sold. This is because that is the way your broker files it with IRS
