It probably would be a good idea but one possibility remains. It might not be any better than Intel's, even running on Athlon but I wouldn't count on it.

Bingo. That's one advantage Intel has over AMD. If AMD wants to do better in the SPEC benchmark comparisons, they'll need to push more compiler development for Athlon (either by themselves or via third party).

The alternative would be to opt out of SPEC benchmarking and rely on other benchmarks to market Athlon. But that would look too much like a "sour grapes" strategy, especially since AMD was more than eager to brag about SPEC scores back when Athlon had the lead.
