<<Would you say that the numerous countries who no longer allow the state to kill people under any circumstances are "less just" than our country, or that their concept of justice is less refined than ours?>> Apples and oranges here. What is this more or less stuff anyway. Our country's justice system is bankrupt and getting worse. Pull the covers from over your face.

<<We decide what is just. Nobody else. If we decide that justice is adequately served by life imprisonment without parole, then justice is served.>> The we you speak of has been redefining justice since the beginning of time. From the beginning of time we have had the common sense to recognize an inballance in favor. We are self aware and socially conscious beings. We didn't learn from the scholars of jurisprudence that it is wrong to step on someone elses toe in the 21st century. The we you speak of are the powerful elite. Wake up Candide, your time in space is no more special than those who've gone before you. Justice based on principle that lasts the test of time generally is seen by those of other times as good and fair. How do you think our time will be viewed. Not so hot, IMO. Criminals fair quite well at all levels and you would have the common decent person humbled at their feet, and yours. Step off of that evolutionary merry-go-round and give your ego a rest.
