BLACK HAWK MINING INC. ANNOUNCES LETTER OF INTENT FOR AN OPTION-JOINT VENTURE AGREEMENT WITH A SUBSIDIARY OF NEWMONT MINING CORPORATION (NYSE ? NEM) Toronto, Canada, June 21, 2000 BLACK HAWK MINING INC. (TSE-BHK) is pleased to announce that it has signed of a Letter of Intent with Newmont Overseas Exploration Limited (a 100% subsidiary of Newmont Mining Corporation) to negotiate an option and joint venture agreement on Black Hawk?s Nicaraguan exploration mineral concessions. The option will include Black Hawk?s 1736 sq. km Limon-La India exploration concession and two other exploration concessions (government approval pending) with an aggregate aerial extent of 145 sq. km. The terms of the option require Newmont to spend a minimum US$5.0 million over a six-year period to earn a 55% vested interest in the properties, with a minimum first year expenditure of US$275,000. Upon completion of its initial investment Newmont will have a one-time, 90-day option to earn an additional 20% interest by spending an additional US$4.0 million within an additional two years. Upon vesting, the companies will then participate in programs and expenditures on a prorata basis. Newmont will be the operator and will retain the right to terminate the agreement at any time by giving 30 days written notice to Black Hawk. Completion of the option agreement is subject to approval of each company?s board of directors. The exploration concessions straddle a portion of the eastern boundary of the north-west striking Nicaraguan graben, a depression, and encompass Tertiary volcanic and intrusive rocks of the Nicaraguan highland to the east of the graben and Tertiary and Quaternary volcanic and sedimentary rocks located in the depression itself. This prospective geological setting extends from Costa Rica through Nicaragua north to Honduras and into El Salvador. Examples of gold districts and deposits that are associated with this exploration environment include the Cerro Crucitas deposit in Costa Rica, the Limon and La India gold mining districts in Nicaragua and the El Dorado camp in El Salvador. Black Hawk?s extensive (1880 sq. km) exploration concessions are adjacent to its Limon mining concession that covers the existing gold mining operation forecast to produce 84,000 ounces of gold in 2000. The Limon mining concession is not part of the option arrangement. Newmont, the world?s second largest gold producing company, brings considerable experience and resources to complement Black Hawk?s exploration efforts in Nicaragua. Newmont?s efforts will be directed to the search for multi-million ounce and large tonnage gold and gold-silver deposits. BLACK HAWK MINING INC. is an international mining and exploration company that operates the El Limon Mine in Nicaragua, and holds prospective gold/silver exploration properties in Nicaragua, Canada, Argentina and the United States. Black Hawk is listed on The Toronto Stock Exchange under the symbol BHK. For further information please contact: Mr. Michael GareauVice President, ExplorationTel. (416) 363-6268 Mr. Garth A.C.
