Les, regarding cash on the sidelines, and the mutual fund industry in general, i agree with R.Russell that the industry has become incredibly bloated, and that's asking for a period of consolidation as well.

people may not know this, but the assets of Japan's mutual fund industry shrank by 92% (!) between late '89 and '96.
and in '89, at the height of the bubble there, it took in record amounts of money, just as the US fund industry did this year.

this goes to show that at times, people do indeed abandon equities for considerable periods of time. which is why the demographic argument remains highly suspect.
