Freezing the machine sounds like an IRQ clash that the bios couldn't resolve (happened to me when my NIC for my cable modem was installed).

Does the printer react (make a whirring sound) when the computer gets turned on?

Is the Kingston card just a NIC? Could you get another NIC?

If your printer port itself didn't go bad, then a fresh install of W98 may fix the problem.

Can you print the test page from the windows printer setup routine?

Have you tried seaching in www.deja.com to see if anyone on Usenet has ever had the same problem?

Have you tried Microsoft's knowledgebase on their website?

Was the CMOS cleared when the bios was updated?

That's about all I can think of.
