He did and maybe does. The one Mundus nailed, lets say there were some questions about how it was caught. Mundus found a dead whale that 3 of the great whites were feeding on. Actually his mate held the pole.

Somehow my book on sharks is missing as are many others. A&E had a special on the sharks of Australia. Not long ago the Prime Minister was swimming between two body guards and a shark took him without a sound or trace. In the 60s a large tiger shark (record?) was caught at night in one of the Carolinas. It was caught from a pier used for swimming during the day. These guys had been catching sharks night after night from that pier. The big one got attention and fishing from the pier was banned.
