Telerj Celular, Globalstar Launch Mobile Services - Brazil
December 1, 1999

Brazilian mobile operator Telefonica Celular and Brazilian satellite communications operator Globalstar do Brasil will officially launch on Friday (Dec.3) their mobile satellite services for Rio Grande do Sul state.

The new satellite system is designed to provide coverage in those areas where the existing mobile network does not reach. Globalstar claims it will have full coverage across Brazilian territory from July next year.

Globalstar sales manager Helder de Azevedo said he expects to have more than 5,000 mobile satellite users in the state by the end of 2000, and a total of 50,000 subscribers across Brazil by the same date.

Each Globalstar handset costs US$1,864 and each call routed via the satellite network will cost US$2.08 per minute. Calls routed over traditional mobile networks will be charged in line with existing rates.
