Well to qualify as a pension fund investment - in Canada - a company has to have a consistent dividend history - at least this used to be the case - so majors who want to be owned by pension funds pay dividends - but beyond this I think the feeling is that investors are not in thse stocks because of the dividends paid. The South African stocks used to pay high dividends - but there was a different philosophy in play with these companies.
