I don't think it proves anything of the kind - gold failed to hold its gains - but what has that to do with how the gold stocks performed? I doubt if the two attract the same investors. Gold stocks are lagging because nobody believes that gold will penetrate $300 and hold.

No, I don't take it that way at all. My view is:
1. nothing goes straight up or down.
2. the manipulators are powerful.
3. There was some Swiss gold hit the market- though in a decent manner.
4. One of the big players - NEM - has a spill problem the market is seeing as greatly their problem. the move in nem more than offsets + move in some others today.
