I'm struck by how few people are talking about the "coincidence" of the arrests in these espionage cases. Well, it certainly could be a coincidence but we'll never know. All I can say is we see national security and espionage cases brought up on a regular basis as they are normally heard and tried here in the DC area. Most of them don't get much publicity though since the CoIntel folks are still trying to assess damage from the penetrations. However, the case of this colonel should not be downplayed as something that happened in ancient history, as it clearly was not. He was arrested as the result of a sting operation where Federal Agents posed as Russian intelligence operatives who apparently wished to "reactivate" him and offered additional payment above the $250,000 he received during his spy career. Apparently, since he was currently working as a grocery "bagman", he probably was attracted by the prospect of mo' money. Little did he know he was about to truly realize an alternative definition when the Feds but the Habeus Grabbus on him. What this guy did was incredibly damaging to US interests, as well as any number of innocent individuals who were interviewed or interrogated by this guy's office. The office he worked for during the cold war was responsible for strategic debriefings of a wide array of sources, some US intelligence assets, while others were merely emigrants, scholars, and scientists who had left the communist block (nuclear scientists and physicists being a top priority). By reporting to his Soviet handlers the result of these debriefings, he place these people at risk, as well as the lives of US assets still active in the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe. I think the story will unfold over time, but this guys could be the equivalent of another Aldrich Ames if he has the access that I sense he may have had. But I do completely agree with you about Operation Desert Fox. Really blatant Wag the Dog stuff there. Can't wait until he's gone. Sorry for the off topic stuff, but I figure this thread has been kinda deal recently. Need to spice it up... :0) Regards, Ron
