Bank Credit Analyst sees more inflation ahead

The U.S. small business sector?s survey
has provided a good warning in the past
6 to 12 months that pricing pressures
were set to bubble over into higher
inflation. Indeed, core CPI has crept up
this year (see yesterday?s Insight) and
the May report showed that this trend
should persist. The pressure to lift
selling prices is intensifying, because of
rising labor and energy costs. The
reported price changes series shows
that businesses have been increasingly
successful in lifting selling prices,
underscoring that core CPI should
continue to move up. The recent
celebration in the markets that the Fed
is finished tightening for an extended
period is premature.
