In fact, we don't use Perl, although we do have it in some solutions. We mainly use PHP4 (and C++ for some CPU intensive things), but will consider using Kylix (from Inprise) for servers, too, if it fits. PHP can generate both dynamic GIFs, PNGs, PDFs and, of course, HTML, ASCII, SYLK, RTF etc.

For applications, Kylix provides a GUI development tool that makes both Linux and Windows (Delphi 6) programs, with the same source-code. But we haven't found out whether Kylix will be able to provide the same internet server capabilities that Delphi 5 has.

We only use SOAP and SOAP-alike protocols for communication between processes. We don't use it for integrating with the COM system of Windows, yet, I'm not even sure whether that is possible right now. The main requirement to our protocols is that it is cross-platform, that we don't have to specify an OS for our solutions.
