=DJ Lucent Takes Almost Half Verizon's '00 Capital Spending

NEW YORK (Dow Jones)--With the promise of at least $1.5 billion in business on
Verizon Wireless' mobile phone network, Lucent Technologies Inc. (LU) will
account for more than half of Verizon's capital spending this year.

Verizon, a joint venture of Bell Atlantic Corp. (BEL) and Vodafone Airtouch
PLC (VOD), and Lucent announced Thursday a letter of intent naming Lucent as
Verizon's primary supplier of network infrastructure.

Verizon, which plans to spend $3.1 billion on capital projects this year, had
previously announced it would buy $500 million worth of network equipment from
Lucent's rival Nortel Networks Corp. (NT), said Verizon spokeswoman Andrea
Linskey.

Still unclaimed is $1.1 billion worth of equipment, which will be up for grabs
among Lucent, Nortel and Motorola Inc. (MOT), which all provide CDMA wireless
technology infrastructure equipment.

But Lucent, which has a long-standing relationship with all the wireless
parties making up Verizon, will have a strong shot at capturing more contracts.

And Verizon plans to spend another $3.1 billion on capital projects in 2001.

"The history of reliability is there," Linskey said, referring to Lucent's
equipment. "There is a history with all the companies and Lucent. They worked
with Bell Atlantic Mobility when we launched the first commercial CDMA mobile
phone network in 1996."

Verizon is the largest mobile phone service provider in the U.S., with more
than 18 million customers.

The company will use Lucent's equipment to evolve its network into
"third-generation" technology, which promises data rates 10 times faster than
now and double the voice capacity on the network.

Verizon's board of directors must approve the agreement before it becomes a
formalized contract.
