Re: CDMA Roaming with a GSM net (removing the barrier of roaming) - From GSMA:

<< The Roaming Forum is a world-leading industry initiative to enable inter-standard roaming with GSM.

The second meeting of the Global Roaming Forum took place at the Intercontinental Hotel, 1 Hamilton Place, London on Wednesday June 14th 2000

The Global Roaming Forum were discussing the Technology Team project plans, approving the Operating Procedures, discussing the IPR policy, electing a Chairman, reviewing CIBER/TAP conversion strategies, reviewing the Inter-Operator Tariff principles, discussing Intellectual Property Rights, discussing TDMA, CDMA, and iDEN work plans and discussing the paths forward.

Great headway was made at the first meeting, which helped to set the stage for the challenging road ahead. We would like to thank everyone who attended and particpated in this, the second Global Roaming Forum. >>

also from a Press release preceeding the meeting:

>> One of the Forum's key aims is to promote innovation through the pooling of knowledge and expertise with other Roaming Forum members; it strives to ensure joint work programmes and cooperation in standardising, facilitating, and evolving inter-standard roaming. Some of the key components required to bring about inter-standard roaming include:

* Networks: to ensure the ground-based infrastructure - which carries signalling, voice, and data messages - can communicate with each other

* Billing: to ensure different systems for exchanging call detail records can interoperate in a timely manner

* Authentication: to ensure different standards for fraud monitoring and user validation can be bridged

* Handsets: so that the customer's phone can recognize various different technologies

Global Roaming (London meeting) Forum Sponsors:

* Vodafone AirTouch: a global wireless network operator with both GSM and CDMA systems.

* Cibernet: a provider of programs to facilitate the financial settlements between cellular network operators.

* Logica: a solutions provider that translates signalling for mobility management for call delivery and short messaging between different technologies.

* EDS: a provider of services to operators for exchanging the billing records destined for customer bills. <<
