Brazil Agency Allows Fixed-Phone Prices to Rise Up to 11.9%

Brasilia, June 19 (Bloomberg) -- Brazil's National
Telecommunications Agency authorized the country's fixed-line
phone providers to increase rates by up to 11.9 percent beginning
Thursday.

The agency allows companies to raise rates for residential
customers by an average of 10.5 percent for local calls, by 11.92
percent for national long-distance calls and 3.74 percent for
international calls, an agency spokeswoman said.

The increase could help companies such as Tele Norte Leste SA
or Telecommunicacoes de Sao Paulo SA offset some of the costs
related to an expansion in telecommunications services and of
increasing costs for the import of telecommunications equipment
that became more expensive after Brazil's currency devaluation
last year.

Consumer prices have risen 6.5 percent in the 12 months ended
May 2000. The agency allows telecommunication companies to
increase their calling rates once a year.
