Friday June 16, 3:42 pm Eastern Time U.S. Options-Rambus vols rise, volume soars CHICAGO, June 16 (Reuters) - Implied volatility rose and volume soared on Friday in options on high-technology company Rambus Inc. (NasdaqNM:RMBS - news) as the stock skyrocketed. Implied vols for the July 80s rose to about 120 percent. ``They have gone up about 10 percent,'' said Randy Emer, designated primary market maker with Eclipse JV at the Chicago Board Options Exchange. The stock's one-month historical volatility was about 130 percent. He said a portion of Friday's trading stemmed from position-squaring as some holders of June options, which expire Friday afternoon, scrambled to exit positions. Some short-term traders, however, appeared to be taking a shot in the expiring Junes by setting fresh positions on Friday. For example, the June 75 calls, which rose 7-1/2 to 8-1/4, had volume of 2,782 on zero open interest. In other expiries, Emer noted protective put buying, call sales against stock purchases, and outright buying of out-of-the-money calls. ``The paper seems to be pretty bullish (in bias),'' he added. Options volume also soared on Friday, and by 2:15 p.m. CDT (1915 GMT), roughly 25,610 June-January 38.75-110 calls only, on just the CBOE, had traded. That compared to average daily put and call volume during the last 20 trading sessions of roughly 8,280 options on the CBOE, American Stock Exchange and Pacific Exchange combined, according to Track Data figures. Stock of the California-based Rambus, which makes high-speed computer chip interface technology, vaulted higher on Friday after chipmaker Toshiba Corp. said it expanded its license of Rambus technology. Morgan Stanley Dean Witter analyst Mark Edelstone also upgraded Rambus shares to ``strong buy'' from ``outperform.'' Rambus stock started trading Thursday on the basis of a four-for-one split, which also may have lifted shares Friday. Rambus shares jumped 24-5/16 to 81 on Nasdaq market volume of 59 million.
