I do see a battle between NTAP and EMC to become increasingly intense. NTAP's VI and SAN strategy is unfolding enough to see that the scalability and storage to host throughput issues that have been discussed so much are being addressed with technologies that leapfrog EMC's current architecture.

So NTAP will have its proprietary file system and all of the features that it provides, and a potentially more modular, more scalable, more distributable architecture than EMC.

You can bet that NTAP does have as a goal to out do EMC in EMC's own markets. They have a lot of ex-EMC and ex-DGN engineers working on the strategy. (They have some Sun Fellows as well.)
