Rambus Wants Fees From Other Cos Using Memory - Analyst
Dow Jones Newswires

NEW YORK -- Rambus Inc. (RMBS) claims it can collect royalties from any company that makes products using next-generation memory chips, according to SG Cowen analyst Drew Peck.

Toshiba Corp. (J.TOS) already signed an agreement covering patents for fundamental aspects of high-speed interfaces invented by Rambus, and will pay Rambus a license fee and royalties, according to a Thursday press release.

In a CNBC interview Friday, Peck said some other company's will probably follow Toshiba's example and others will resist paying Rambus royalties. However, he predicted that Rambus will fight to reap royalties from all companies using memory products in court.

"Anything that uses memory is potentially a candidate" to pay Rambus royalties, he said.

He estimated that 1% royalties in a $20 billion DRAM industry will bring Rambus about $100 million to $200 million in added annual revenue.
