Sudan: UN Postpones Discussion On Lifting Sanctions To 21st June
Text of report in English by Sudanese news agency Suna

Khartoum, 14th June: The UN Security Council has agreed on postponement of discussion on lifting sanctions imposed on Sudan since 1996 to next Wednesday [21st June] at the request of a number of countries for further consultations.

External Relations Minister Dr Mustafa Uthman Isma'il said in a statement to Suna [Sudanese news agency] that Sudan has been given time to discuss the issue with the powers that may oppose the draft resolution to reach a sort of agreement.

Meanwhile, the minister said the visit of the American envoy, Harry Johnston, to Sudan carries positive indicators, expressing hope that these indicators would be accelerated till the relations between the two countries are normalized.

He said Sudan appreciates the importance of USA and its concerns in the area and what it could contribute to boosting the peace process in Sudan, pointing out that this role cannot be achieved unless the USA adopts a neutral attitude.

He added that the American envoy's visit discussed pending peace initiatives and the possibilities of coordination between them or their merger.

The minister pointed out that Sudan expressed its views on a number of American reservations and affirmed the importance of tackling these issues to push ahead the bilateral relations so that USA could contribute to the peace process in the country.
