High Court Rejects Prayer at School Football Games June 19, 2000 10:53 am EST WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. Supreme Court ruled on Monday that students may not be permitted to lead a stadium crowd at a public high school football game in prayer, a defeat for Republican presidential candidate George W. Bush. The high court, by a 6-3 vote, declared that allowing a student to deliver a Christian prayer over the loudspeaker before kickoff violates the constitutional requirement on separation of church and state. Returning to a politically sensitive issue in an election year, the Supreme Court added to rulings in 1962 barring public school prayers in the classroom, and in 1992 barring prayers at graduation ceremonies. The decision represented a major defeat for Texas Gov. Bush, who endorsed the arguments by a school district in his state that students have the right to take part in student-initiated, group prayers at football games. Justice John Paul Stevens wrote for the majority: "The policy is invalid on its face because it establishes an improper majoritarian election on religion and unquestionably has the purpose and creates the perception of encouraging the delivery of prayer at a series of important school events." WHAT I FIND INTERESTING IN THIS STORY, ARE sTEVENS WORDS"" unquestionably has the purpose and creates the perception of encouraging the delivery of prayer at a series of important school events." Lord forbid there should be a perception of encouraging prayer in a Chrisitan nation, One nation under GOD even. Praise God time is getting closer.stevens??? MAy God have mercy on you.
